Protecting Your Chefs

restaurant foodA restaurant is nothing without a good chef. They serve up the best dishes, the work hard to correct bad orders. At the end of the day, your chef goes a long way to keep the customer happy.

However, your chef faces many risks when he or she runs the kitchen. It should be your job as a business owner to make sure that you provide your chef with the protections he or she needs.

Keep these tips in mind when thinking about your chef’s personal and financial safety.

Keep Good Business Insurance

Customers can sue a restaurant for food that burns them or causes them to get sick, among other injuries. It is up to a restaurant’s workers, including chefs, to do everything possible to ensure that they are serving safe, quality food.

However, things happen. Good business insurance will protect your employees from financial liability in case someone takes action. You should make sure that you have strong liability coverage.

Some chefs can potentially invest in extra insurance policies to give them extra protection. However, these policies may only be available to personal and private chefs.

Provide Good Workers’ Compensation

Kitchens can be messy places. A chef is always at risk of injury from a kitchen fire or other accidents. If a chef gets hurt, then he or she may have to be out of work while recovering. You may have to pay the chef workers’ compensation even if the accident isn’t your fault.

A strong workers’ compensation plan can protect your business and your chef. He or she might have the resources to get back to work sooner and in a safe financial state.

Protect a Chef’s Personal Safety

The last thing you need is a chef to get hurt because he or she is working in a dangerous environment. That could lead to problems for your business, to say the least.

You should make sure that you have safe equipment for your chef to work with. It may be the chef’s kitchen, but it is your restaurant. Make sure that your utensils are up to date and that appliances work properly. Also have items like your fire extinguisher system, gas system and cooking ranges inspected regularly. Vigilance can prevent injuries.

Keeping your chef safe is a way of protecting your business. Workers’ compensation, liability insurance and a safe working environment can help. If you need help deciding how to cover your employees, call us today at (708) 423-2350.
