How to Prevent Theft in Your Restaurant

You might not think of your restaurant as a target for thieves, as opposed to places like banks or stores. Think again. The convenience of restaurants often puts them at risk. How can you recover from such accidents? Will your insurance provide assistance? More importantly, image of coffee shop registers how can you avoid theft in the first place?

No restaurant owner wants to deal with theft. With the right safety steps, you can secure your property to make the chances of such an incident remote.

Why Thieves Target Restaurants?

Most restaurants operate quite profitably. They also likely have a substantial amount of cash on hand. These establishments usually offer ease of access. With these factors in mind, a thief might consider your store just the place to make a quick heist and head out the door.

Not so fast. With the correct security apparatus, you can keep theft and burglary risks at bay. Every restaurant owner should consider a security system their first line of defense.

Restaurant Security Preparations

Strive to keep your restaurant safe 24 hours per day, regardless of whether you are open. Practical security steps might include:

  • Install a burglar alarm system. The apparatus should extend to all corners of the business. Keep this system armed at all times, particularly during opening or closing periods. Some of these systems will include silent alarms for you to alert authorities in case of an active theft.
  • Maintain a camera system. It should operate continuously. Place the camera in clear view in high-risk areas. Such places might include near entrances, cash registers, safes, refrigerators and storage rooms.
  • Keep track of your inventory. That way, you’ll be able to notice if food, dishes or utensils start to disappear. Also teach staff to watch for these problems as well.
  • Store alcohol under lock and key at all times. This remains one of the most-stolen items in restaurant thefts.
  • Also encourage your staff to safeguard all tips, whether on their person or in a secure area.
  • Keep cash reserves locked away, preferably in a safe. Do not share the safe’s key code with anyone.
  • Generally, you should lock cash register boxes, or take the money out of the box, at the end of each day.

If you have restaurant insurance, your policy will likely include a degree of help for theft. It might help you replace damaged property or possessions stolen in the act. Keep in mind, a standard policy might not cover stolen cash. Therefore, talk to your agent at 708.423.2350 about adding this coverage. With the right care, you can minimize the impact of theft in your restaurant.
