Getting Married? How to Update Your Auto Insurance

family in carAs you celebrate your new start on life and the wide range of opportunities out there for you, one thing is for sure. You’ll need to make some changes. While you make those changes, do not forget to update your auto insurance policy. It may not seem like something that needs to be a focus immediately after getting married. However, it should be something you do at least when you renew your car insurance plan. What do you need to do to keep your auto insurance plan up to date?

What to Do Now

You do not have to make updates immediately at the time of getting married. This is specifically true in situations where you will continue to operate your current vehicle for most of your driving and your spouse will use his or her vehicle in the same fashion.

However, updating your policy sooner rather than later can be a very good thing. Here are a few key things to keep in mind when you do this.

  • Adding a spouse to your policy is important if that person will be a primary driver of your vehicle. This helps to ensure that both of you have protection should you be involved in an accident or another substantial traffic incident.
  • When you add your spouse to your car insurance, you may see your premium drop. Many times, you will see a lower premium overall because this may reduce the risk level in the eyes of the insurer.
  • Bundling your auto insurance together can also save you money. If you now have two vehicles to cover, bundling them into one policy reduces your costs significantly. Include any renters or homeowners insurance at this time as well.

If you are getting married, do not forget to let your home insurance agent know of the change. This could mean adding a new driver to your policy, adding a new vehicle, and even getting a policy that is a better fit for your new lifestyle. Alert them of any move as well. These factors influence how much coverage you have and when your coverage applies. It can also impact how much you pay for your car insurance each year. It only takes a minute to let them know, but it can be a very important step.

If you've made a big change in your life, and need to update your insurance policy, call Buschbach insurance today at (708) 423-2350 to update!
