Avoiding Exhaustion in Long-Haul Trucking

image of long haul truck drivingBeing a long-haul trucker means that you’re on the job whenever you are on the road. Driving these long distances may take hours or even days.

Even though you are at work while you drive, you still have to look out for yourself. Self-care helps protect the trucker, the company and the cargo from safety risks.

Such long periods of driving can lead to exhaustion, and driving fatigue is a serious safety risk. When truck drivers become fatigued they pose an insurance risk to their companies. Fatigue can lead to reduced reaction times, lack of attention and falling asleep at the wheel. All these actions could lead to accidents that create a huge liability for truckers.

The law requires that most truckers take rest breaks after a certain number of hours on the road. These required rest periods allow truckers to recuperate after a long period on the road. Recuperation reduces risks. If you don’t comply by rest laws, your insurance company may have the grounds to deny an accident claim.

Taking Advantage of Rest Periods

When you take a rest period, make sure you do so productively. Rest periods are times for truckers to recuperate and relax. That way, truckers can get back on the road with a safe level of risk.

  • Drink and eat responsibly during your time on the road. Fruit, veggies and healthy amounts of sugar help energize you and can improve your focus. However, fatty, starchy food, too much sugar, and too much caffeine can lead to sugar crashes later. These can lead to exhaustion.
  • It goes without saying, but do not drink alcohol or take illegal drugs while on the road. Many trucking companies require truckers to refrain from these habits to maintain employment.
  • When you need to rest, do so productively. Make sure that you get a full night’s sleep during your overnight period. Try to avoid too much screen time or other activities that may cause exhaustion later.
  • If you become tired while you drive, take periodic breaks. A 15-minute power nap can greatly improve focus while driving. Take these breaks to go to the bathroom, stretch your legs, or just relax.

Importantly, don’t travel when you need to rest. Never give in to pressure and push through on a delivery. If you exceed your required stop-time, it is best that you search for a safe place to stop. Resting will help improve your focus so that you arrive at your destination safely. It will also protect your trucking company from insurance liabilities.
